In partnership with the Fondation Napoléon in Paris, the Massena Society is pleased to sponsor one of the annual research grants (bourse) awarded by the Fondation for Ph.D. research on Napoleonic subjects of the First or Second Empire. The successful applicant will receive a grant of 7500€.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be full-time graduate students in an accredited graduate doctoral program with an approved dissertation topic in diplomatic, political, economic, and military history of the Napoleonic eras, including both the First and Second Empire. Students should be in their first year of research after qualifying examinations.
Submission Guidelines
Applications for this Massena Society candidacy must be received by August 30, 2019. Details of the application may be found at: http://en.fondationnapoleon.org/activities-and-services/furthering-research/research-grants/. Complete the application in French and submit all required documents and your curriculum vitae as email attachments to Dr. Alex Grab, Bourse@MassenaSociety.org. If you do not receive an email confirmation of receipt within 24 hours, please email the Massena Society webmaster at massenasociety@gmail.com.
The Massena Society will forward their candidate to the Fondation by September 30, 2019, and notify applicants of the Society’s selection. Massena Society endorsement does not imply selection by the Fondation jury. Final announcement of the award will be made by the Fondation Napoléon Research Grant Jury meeting in November 2019.
What Is Expected of Fellows
While the Ph.D. dissertation may be written in English, non-French speaking applicants must agree to spend half of the grant award either on research work in France or on French language instruction if the candidate has no French (receipts will be requested). The successful candidate will then be invited to the award ceremony in Paris in December 2019. As a condition of support, the recipient must recognize this award in their curriculum vitae as the “Masséna Society-Fondation Napoléon bourse” and acknowledge the support of the Masséna Society and the Fondation in any publications resulting from this sponsored research.
